Course description and grading

Full course description can be found from Peppi.

Goals

Student understands the intended use and the basics for 3D modeling with Blender. The student can design and create a 3D modeled scene and publish it for various uses.

Scope

Course is 5 ECTs. In working hours it's 137,5 hours of work at most.

Contents

  • Theory of 3D graphics and the needed software
  • Modeling process and methods
  • Usage of lighting and cameras
  • Materials and textures
  • Modifiers
  • Rendering
  • Composition
  • Publishing

Materials

Materials are produced by JAMK. There will also be optionals material linked on the course page. For example Youtube has a great amount of good tutorials.

Implementation

In spring 2022 the course is distance learning with weekly lectures and exercises in Teams meetings. Attending the meetings is highly suggested especially in the first half of the course.

Active learning and good attitude is more crucial feat in this course than artistic or technical background.

Because of the pandemic restrictions we have to start this course by distance learning. It might be possible for us to move back to classroom (D426) later in the spring. Follow JAMK instructions about the restrictions.

Communication

MS Teams is used for communication in this course. You can join the Teams channel here.

Grading

Grading is based on the final assignment and report.

Returned bonus exercises are also considered in the final grade. They can round up your grade if it's somewhere between two grades.

Documentation is a short report based on how the project was implemented. About 1-2 "pages" of text. In the report you should consider the following topics:

  • The subject and the design of the work
  • The workflow / process
  • Technologies used
  • Working hours and self-evaluation with a grade suggestion

Return the .blend file and 3-5 rendered images of your work using different camera angles!

Grade Requirements Summary
5 The student creates an excellent 3D scene which presents a deeper focus on one or many advanced techniques learned in the course. Textures are complex and the work has been finished with composition effects. In the documentation the student goes through all the phases of the work, techniques and includes a realistic and justified self-evaluation. Working hours are over the estimated. Cycles Render, Texture, Particles, Node-editor, Composition, Sculpting
4 ... Cycles Render, Texture, Particles, Node-editor, Composition, Sculpting
3 The student creates a 3D scene which includes proper usage of the techniques from the first half of the course, but also includes some advanced techniques as well. Materials and textures have at least some detail, modifiers have been used wisely, the lighting is thoughful etc. Documentation includes the phases of work, used techniques, working hours and realistic self-evaluation. Working hours close to the estimate. Cycles Render, Texture, Particles, Node-editor, Composition, Sculpting
2 ... Box Modeling, Modifiers, Texture
1 The student implements a simple 3D scene or a model which presents the techniques learned in the first half of the course. Work might include modified materials but is lacking textures. Use of modifiers is limited (for example only subsufrace division). Documentation is lacking the phases of work and techniques. Working hours well below the estimate. Box Modeling, Modifiers, Texture
0 The student does not manage to create a simple and intact 3D model following the materials of the first half of the course. ...
